The Best of National Stationery Show 2014, Part 1

Highlighting my trip to New York City for the National Stationery Show is not a simple task. With all the new trends and unexpected surprises to share, compiling it into one post is impossible. That said, I’ll share some of my favorite lines I spotted last month at the Javits Convention Center through a series of posts over the next few weeks. Enjoy!!

Once again, Christine from Yellow Owl Workshop worked her magic and talent within this gorgeous display space (it took her and an assistant only 2 hours to hand paint the booth!)

Emily McDowell was the show-stopper this year. With her beautiful and thoughtful hand lettered paper goods, this booth was consistently well packed with attendees.

Pineapples were popping up everywhere this year, but Hartland Brooklyn was my favorite! Emily from Hartland Brooklyn freshened up her pink neon with a new South Pacific direction.

One line soon to join the Brown Ink Paper Goods boutique is Linda & Harriett out of Brooklyn, NY. We weren’t the only ones at the show crazy for the 2015 Painted Letterpress Calendars! In general, calendars appear to be the new rage, taking the place of the faithful recipe cards.

Another soon-to-debut line on Brown Ink is Ferme a Papier. With its Tahitian-Parisian inspired collection, these lovely bold colors kept drawing me back each day to visit with creator Cat Seto.

Cowgirl

I dream nearly every night and often remember a good chunk of my dreams. Lately I seem to be traveling to warm destinations (imagine that). The other night in the middle of some deep snores, I found myself in New York City strolling thru hundreds of booths filled with ink and paper at the National Stationery Show. Thankfully this image will become a reality this coming May and I cannot wait. This being my second year of attending, I’m still a new cowgirl to the rodeo but ready as ever.

One of the reasons I’ve been dreaming of the Javits Convention Center (vs. the beach) is my love of checking out highlights from this past year’s Gift Shows. I often head to the paper goods blog, Oh So Beautiful Paper, which summarizes each show with thought, diversity and lots of good eye candy. I’ve got my eye on a handful this year…

Sapling Press

Speaking of hot stationery lines swirling around out there, here are a few others which keep pulling me in…

The folks from Philadelphia based, Wayfare Press, bring a love of paper and youth to their designs.

Satsuma Press has also been top of mind these days, such beautiful detail in their designs.

One recent launch which just exploded on social media is the collaboration of Rifle Paper and Garance Dore, the first out of Florida and the second designer based in Paris. They recently premiered their line in Paris and I’m excited to check out the products in person while attending the New York show this Spring.

Lastly, to fellow Twin Citians, are you looking for another good reason to get out from under the covers this weekend? The second monthly Makers Market is taking place over at Mille

We’ll be there, bringing with us a nice batch of Sale items as well. Make sure to swing by!

we love our Mothers

Mother’s Day is only two weeks away. So I thought I might share some ideas which hopefully will be passed on to the fathers, husbands or in-laws in your lives.

First off, I can’t more strongly suggest gifting your mother this Phone Pouchette from russell+hazel. I know, I know, I’m preaching technology but just listen…

phone1This has become my go-to when it comes to note taking outside of the home. And it can easily act as a purse with the interior slots for business or credit cards. Handsome and functional. And for a mother (no mention of names) who misplaces her phone from time to time, you will always know where your phone is ringing and where you last scribbled out an appointment or two.

My mother tends to subtlety “hint” at what she might like for Mother’s Day. Lucky for me, she’s in need of stationery!!! Love that kind of research.

Peacock Feather Pattern Flat Notes-set of 8

These Peacock Feather Pattern note cards from Michelle Brusegaard are lovely for a note to a loved one.

letter1I grew up near the Walker Art Center so my mother was known to reproduce art pieces which spoke to her (once she even painted a canvas orange and stuck a piece of toast right in the center of the painting). This lovely Mekko Note Card from MARA-MI reminds me of a piece she would have replicated.

sally1

My mother-in-law, also a Walker fan, would easily enjoy sending these Piet Note Cards to any one of her lucky friends.

mom2I don’t know a mother who wouldn’t be thrilled to receive these Valencia Note Cards which scream spring has arrived.

(All three MARA-MI cards can be found at their flagship store in Stillwater or their sister store, russell+hazel, in Minneapolis.)

coral letterpress notecard

I’m crazy about this elegant, letterpress Coral note card from Fig & Tulip.

Here’s a little something to help send off a letter in style…

imm living arcadian pig stamp

Mad about the pig stamp from imm living. I mean, come on? I would find excuses to use this cute little Wilbur on any rainy day!

Here’s an idea. Not only surprise the mom in your life with an unexpected trip but plant the airline ticket in this handsome Traveler’s Notebook from Baum-kuchen. An unforgettable Mother’s Day gift, no doubt.

journal_akolamarketThe beautiful selection of journals from Matta are covered with archive fabrics filled with market paper. (Why not pick up a scarf before you click off the site!)

Most mothers these days have some sort of stress on their minds. You can help by gifting her a Massage Pen from Kikkerland with an actual vibrating massager at the tip! (now 20% off site-wide with coupon code MOMSDAY13)

For the mom who likes to keep an orderly desk, the slick acrylic pen and pencil holder from Russel+Hazel makes your writing utensils look like art.

Copper Foil Recipe Cards - product images

Why not send your adult daughter a few family recipes on these copper foil recipe cards from Yellow Owl Workshop?

Sometimes a few words is all a Mother needs to receive. Which is why Shanna Murray illustrated decals is a wonderful gift for any mother figure in your life!

Of course no gift is complete without a card…

Make it! Blooming Mother’s Day Card

I love this Blooming Mother’s Day Card from Moomah. It’s a little DIY project, possibly a perfect card from a grandchild!

But when it comes down to it, we feel the written expression is the most authentic and meaningful. A Mother of any form or nature will cherish this reminder of love.

Cupid on the Prowl

So little time, so much love. A bit of cupid is in all of us even on the bleakest of winter days. The time to move is now my heart-shaped friends.

Looking for crafty ideas? Babble takes the cake (especially when coming from Design Mom, Gabrielle Blair) on creative ways to express your love on Valentine’s Day.  valentine-ideasSuch lovely things come from Yellow Owl Workshop especially for this holiday…

This You and Me card might not be the typical Hallmark Valentine’s card but it really, really like it.

"Love You" Stamp Set - product images of

Make your own homemade radical card with the Love You stamp set.

If you’d like your Valentines to take a different form, the Correspondence Kit from Artware Editions allows you to thread your expressions first by pencil then needle and thread.

Say your sweetheart lives in another town. Why not mail them a Moleskin Message Pocket Postal Notebook filled with nothing but kisses from yours truly.

If you would like to try your hand in calligraphy, the Love Letter Kit from terrain is a beautiful alternative from the expected Valentine’s day card.

Paper Source always comes up with delightful, fresh ideas each Valentine’s season.

This year our boys will be scribbling out thoughtful words (that’s the plan anyway) on these Owl Valentine Cards.

RAD BAG // 2013 Valentine Edition

Rad and Hungry is kind of like an international office supply store with loads of cool supplies not found at the local OfficeMax. Surprise your office mate with this limited-edition Valentine’s Day Rad Bag filled with office supplies in red, pink, white and gold from countries around the globe.

Cupid Card

And pick up one of their kitchy cupid cards while you’re at it! (Psss…they’re free if you spend $40)

Once your card is written why not place it in an Everyday Leather Envelope Wallet from Mark and Graham. Not only will your card be sealed in a lovely presentation but your sweetheart’s future correspondence will be always protected. Personalize it with a scripted letter to make her all the more unique.

If all you have time for this year is a construction paper heart, (fold in half, cut one half of a heart, ta da), so be it. Writing this card will require a few moments of slowing down and expressing a crafted thought or two. This will be a gift in itself.

A Few of Our Favorite Things – Part II

With just a few days left to get through your Christmas list, here are a couple of ideas which might get you through to the 25th….

neon pencil set

This German-made neon pencil set is the ideal shape for those little hands to enjoy writing their thank-you notes come the 26th…or soon thereafter (sorry Brown boys).

These orange bamboo pattern pens from iomoi are perfect for any desk needing a pick-me-up.

Chef's Pencil Set

In my husband’s next life as a chef this chef pencil set from Reform School will come in handy.

Colored Pencils & Brass Holder Set

If you really want to make your mother feel special, surprise her with these colored pencils and brass holder set from Furbish.

Journals

Five Year Diary

The chance printed card set from Hickoree’s is created with painted balls, each made “by chance.” Perfect for the free flowing kind of letter writer.

Paper Cranes- blank cads, set of 6

I know a fella who is crazy about paper cranes. This beautifully designed stationery set from In-vita Paper Studio would be right up his alley.

Oh, Hello Friend has created the sweetest Tiny Airmail Note Set perfect for the one-liners.

Five Year Diary

For the journal writing enthusiast, the Five Year Diary from Canoe would a winner.

The Happiness Project One-Sentence Journal: A Five-Year Record

Gretchen Rubin, who wrote the best seller The Happiness Project, has created a five year, One-Sentence Journal to capture one thought a day. My mother is crazy about her’s.

For some people, it’s all about home. Here, Paper Pastries creates a hand-drawn, hand-lettered custom stamp for your space. Lovely.

If you want to take a chance at creating your own stamps, pick up this carve-a-stamp kit from Yellow Owl Workshop.

Maybe it’s because I spend most of my days with a sweet, little baby but lately I’m all about the smallness of things. The Arcadian Stamps are too sweet for words.

Black Edenham Liberty Print Address Book

I am in desperate need of a new address book (I know, I’m old school). Maybe Santa will leave this beautiful book from Liberty of London under the tree for me?

Image Tattly Designy Temporary Tattoos are a perfect for that someone who appreciates the beauty of tattoos but not forever.

Letterpress Classes

Here’s an idea – Surprise your partner with a letterpress class! The Arm Letterpress in Brooklyn provides letterpress classes and I’ve heard a rumor MCAD does, too.

Wrapping from Family Paper is a wonderful idea for those with not enough time to wrap. However, if you enjoy the final touches as much as I do, head over to russel & hazel (in Edina, MN) where all holiday wrapping is 50% off. I stopped in yesterday to pick up my 2013 calendar inserts and walked away with a lot more goodness!!

Lastly, why not surprise someone with a simple holiday journal?

hphph

I picked this one up last year at Michaels for less than $5 if I remember correctly. It’s tucked away in the attic with the rest of the holiday decor for most of the year. But every December I dust it off and reflect on the holiday. It makes me pause, and take in all that surrounds me. With so much on our plates this time of year and much to be blessed for it’s necessary to stop and note the emotions, the feelings, the images. Remind those around you to do the same with a gift of a holiday journal. They will thank you later in life.

Ho. Ho. Hold that pencil tight.
