The Best of The National Stationery Show Part 2

I’m back with more highlights from my whirlwind weekend in NYC this past May. Let’s first start with a line I can’t wait to debut later this month on Brown Ink…

The creative and local force behind Old Tom Foolery launched a new line last year, Modern Lore, which brings in fresh imagery from different photographers throughout the country.

I’m crazy about the floral images with copper foil text and the succulent gift tags! So much so, Modern Lore is joining Brown Ink Paper Goods boutique this summer.

I’ve been a distant fan of Danni from Oh Hello Friend for years so it was such a treat to meet her in person and check out her thoughtful selection of handmade goods and stationery.

The watercolor and dip-dyed effect is still alive and kicking, my favorite coming from Moglea.

sugar paper brought some serious eye candy to the show this year and I left dreaming of the detailed gold foil notebooks, soon to hit Brown Ink as well. Sweet goods.

If you are still reading at this point, you’re in luck. I’ve continued my 4th of July Sale thru Monday for all those out-of-towners. Use code: Holiday25 for 25% OFF all goods. Now go relax!

Heating Up Hearts

It’s out there all right, all that frigid, jaw dropping, colder-than-cold temperatures….oops, I meant to say all that Love, Love, Love of course!  Another brilliant reason to scribble out a few heartfelt, warming thoughts to others over the next couple of weeks, especially with Valentine’s Day approaching.  We wanted to share a bunch of our favorite love-themed notecards and also some DIY for those crafty folks out there….

Sugar Paper has created a simple card of Love using my favorite combination of pale gray and gold, with paper and foiled letterpress writing on a white envelope. Elegant yet understated.

trianglevalentine3.jpg

This Carnation Love Card Set from Brown Parcel Press combines a bold color-block with a classic, playful style (pssst…keep your eyes open for new products on Brown Ink Paper Goods from this sweet, letterpress company in Georgia coming out in the new few weeks!)

Using hand-set metal and wood type, B.Impressed (via Moorea Seal) has created this typographic I Love U card for an in-your-face message for that certain someone in your life.

There Is Nobody Else I'd Rather Lie In Bed and Look At My Phone Next To / Valentine Card No. 192-C

Then there’s one for Generation Y (and maybe a few X’s) lovebirds from Emily McDowell Draws.

Being a big fan of both stamps and writing, this one wins my heart. Created by paperfinger, I’m delighted to find a shop using hand-drawn calligraphy, starting the process with ink on paper.

And for those DIY fans…

photoKK

My friend Kristin created these Pirate Valentines with her son Bennett who had been bugging her to take a turn on the sewing machine. They found this fabulous inspiration (and even a FREE download) from Mer Mag blog and away they went.

Give Someone a Hug

Looking to send someone a hug miles away? Create one giant hug by writing a note on cut-out hands and, instead of TP, use red ribbon which would reach around the lovable receiver’s body.

I chews you valentine craft from All for the Boys blog

I “Chews” You Valentine from All for the Boys can grab just about anything your heart desires.

If you are looking for a DIY inspirational project but afraid to make the jump, check out the  Valentine’s Card workshop I attended a few years back when my crafty side took control.

Lastly, if your child is finally getting back to school tomorrow (at 8:36am to be exact) won’t they smile to find a Valentine’s Day Joke Note in their lunchbox signed by you?

Cut Paper Heart, 2013

And if you order these stamps now your written words of warmth and tenderness will arrive just in time with the recently released Cut Paper Heart stamp to seal the deal (read history of stamp here). Heat up some hearts and let those words flow!

fade to sunlight

Most Minnesotans are questioning the validity of today’s Spring Equinox what with all our snow and temps in the single digits. It doesn’t help when we’re reminded that last year at this time we were spoiled with an unusually early spring with green grass and flip-flops weather for most of March (cut to deep breath HERE). However, our typical weather is not breaking me down, especially after my California spring pick-me-up last weekend.

My recommendation to all you numb-toed souls is this; purchase some Watch ’em Grow forced bulb garden, pull out your Easter chicks and Passover decor, and let your inner warmth shine while writing or making cards!!

Start by heading to Paper Source to find your Easter supplies. Yesterday I stopped in to find a sea of pastels, bunnies and eggs in every direction.

Even if you are short on time with the kids, stamping a few easter eggs with silver bunnies and handwriting a message is fresh and unique. Also pretty adorable.  And while you’re at it, pick up some cards to send to a family member who’s away for the spring holiday. Some of my favs….

Find a way to bring some brightness to your day. It might feel like winter for some of us but spring has, really, truly, arrived and thankfully our sunlight is lasting longer (dissolve to final deep breath before we fade to black). Hippity Hop!

wonderment

I’m a true believer that it’s never too late to send a card and in the midst of Hannukah and with Christmas two weeks away you still have plenty of time to fill up the mailbox down on the corner. So here’s a few of our favorites…

Mitten

This handmade, one-of-a-kind Mitten card from Gold Teeth Brooklyn brings out the childish wonder in everyone.

These simple words say it all. I love the gold foil on bright white paper selected by sugar-paper.

As a child Over the River and Through the Woods was sung numerous times on our way headed east towards Manitowoc, WI for the holidays. This card pulls a heart string. It’s good to see this song holds meaning to Campbell Raw Press as well.  You can even have this one personalized.

Chartreuse Snowflake - set of 8

These chartreuse snowflake cards from Wild Ink Press have great texture but keep the simplicity.

Holiday Cookie Cards - Set of 8Adore this Holiday Cookie Chart card, especially at a rate of 8 for $16! Cheers Ann Shen

Shanna Murray has created these beautiful cards with a design hand-adhered creating a lovely raised texture. A piece of art really!

Let it Snow! Letterpress Card

We here in Minnesota were just delieverd 12 inches of the white stuff. Loving it. Although my Uncle in Ely is wishing for more with only 2 inches on his lawn. This one’s for you Will-Bill, created by a letterpress machine and wood type from one of my new favorite’s, Old Faithful Shop.

The Red Berry stationery from Red Bird Ink is a classic twist on the traditional holiday card.

Oh, Christmas tree- single holiday card

Christmas, 1601: Boxed Set of 6 Cards

Local Old Tom Foolery brings the humor many of us need this time of year with their holiday cards.

Hanukkah, H-25: Boxed Set of 10 Cards

They also share the same wit while creating cards for Hanukkah.

Holiday cards

For those DIY folks, frolic has created a wonderful way to use the greenery in your own home with these mini holiday wreath cards.

And if you have it in you, design your own block print cards. The writers at Design Mom say all you need is a trip to your local art supply store and a willing participant, no artistic skill necessary!

Whatever you do this season send out a handwritten card reminding those to take in the  wonderment that can be found even in the darkest and coldest of nights.

A Few of Our Favorite Things – Part I

No snow? We’re still in the holiday spirit over here at brown ink headquarters. And with Hanukkah beginning this Saturday and Christmas three weeks away it’s time to send out the elves. We’ve found a few goodies to make even the most uber-electronic fanatic consider some items from the old-school.

First off, let’s start with the gifts that keep on giving.

This might look like your ordinary bacon pen but hold on to your skillet. This Seven Year Pen can write 1.7 meters a day for seven years. Thanks to Seltzer, it’s the best $7.50 you will ever spend.

LargeThe other day I received this karma card from my very “green” friend, Alix. The stationery, created by New Leaf Products, is perforated in the middle so I’m able to reuse this card as a postcard.

And now, down to business….

Colored Pencils 8 ea

These rad Colored Pencils from Target are ideal stocking stuffers for a friend with pizazz.

The Robot Metallic Pencils from pottery barn kids will surely make easing into Thank You note writing that much easier.

The “rob” silo pencil sharpener from good erdle is a perfect gift for friends who’ve spent time in the country or have a passion for silos.

Serrote Letterpress Notebooks

I love the way the Serrote Letterpress Notebook brings a bit of Portuguese culture into its cover.

Wheel Printed Cover Notebook

Just crazy about these wheel printed cover notebooks from Postalco. Take a look at how they hand-create each one.

Welcome to the world of Thumbook, a tiny signature book that “connects people through pen & ink.” Novel idea. On one side you create a self-portrait incorporating your thumb print and on the other side write a thought or two. Take a look for yourself.

Mini Leather Journal Necklace - Rustic Book Jewelry

Keeping your words close to the heart, here’s a gift for a true journal lover.

Maxx & Unicorn NotebooksMaxx & Unicorn notebooks are well-made and the ideal pocket size. The dark camo design might just be cool enough for the untraditional nephew.

This French notebook from Brook Farm General Store is so lovely you’ll never want to hide it under your bed (where I used to hide my journals as a kid, so sneaky I know).

Lately I’ve noticed unique stamps showing up everywhere I look. The lovely Initial Rubber Stamp from MaeMae Paperie comes right out of little old Minneapolis.

Name Stamp - Custom Stamp for Stationery by Pretty Chic

Surprise your mum with her very own custom stamp from Pretty Chic.

Image of Arctic Stamp Set

Stamp sets make me want to bin the phone and get creative. It’s just too easy to make a page look good with these sets especially this Artic Stamp Set from the beautiful INK WIT creators.

Sailing knots notecard boxset

This letterpress stationery set is perfect for the sailor or boy scout in the family.

Custom Letterpress Stationery - Swash Calligraphy - Personalized Set of 25 Flat Notes

You can never go wrong with personalized stationery, especially if you select a classic style from the designers at Missive. Treat yourself.

City Park Postcard Set 8pcs

Quill and Fox have created an intimate cityscape for this postcard set. Just the right size for a stocking.

Aviator Glasses Correspondence Cards

These Aviator Correspondence Cards from Crane & C0. will make even the coolest cat itch to write a note.

sugar paper from Los Angeles designs all things lovely and the card for all occasion box is no exception. You will make any lover of good stationery smile with this gift.

For the friend who can’t stop typing, surprise her with a new font from My Fonts. At least her emails will arrive in script!

Monogrammed necklaces appear to be the rage these days (don’t you love the 80’s revival?). Get into the groove with this calligraphy necklace from brevity. Your B/F/F/A/E will be so touched she might even loan you her rainbow t-shirt over holiday break.

set of 6 place cards - with birch holders - herbs and tomato/basil

Last Saturday I hit a holiday pop-up market in Linden Hills (love supporting the local artists!) and found these place cards from red cruiser. Nice addition to any meal.

For the child who adores receiving mail, surprise him with his very own mail box from Twin Cities based Metamorphic Toys. I think I actually might ask St. Nick for this one.

Of course, if someone in your life needs a little hint as to what you might be wishing for this holiday season…

The elves at russell+hazel are so bright with ideas they came up with this Holiday Wish List to help those troubled buyers (p.s. 20% off all orders over $50 through Dec 6).

Here’s something to give a personal touch to your gifts – DIY chalkboard holiday gift tags. A perfect craft to accompany you in front of the fire while you dream of sugar plum fairies writing letters of well wishes (my sugar plum fairies write, not dance)….hmmm, I think that egg nog might be setting in!  Ho-Ho-Ho.
