Cowgirl

I dream nearly every night and often remember a good chunk of my dreams. Lately I seem to be traveling to warm destinations (imagine that). The other night in the middle of some deep snores, I found myself in New York City strolling thru hundreds of booths filled with ink and paper at the National Stationery Show. Thankfully this image will become a reality this coming May and I cannot wait. This being my second year of attending, I’m still a new cowgirl to the rodeo but ready as ever.

One of the reasons I’ve been dreaming of the Javits Convention Center (vs. the beach) is my love of checking out highlights from this past year’s Gift Shows. I often head to the paper goods blog, Oh So Beautiful Paper, which summarizes each show with thought, diversity and lots of good eye candy. I’ve got my eye on a handful this year…

Sapling Press

Speaking of hot stationery lines swirling around out there, here are a few others which keep pulling me in…

The folks from Philadelphia based, Wayfare Press, bring a love of paper and youth to their designs.

Satsuma Press has also been top of mind these days, such beautiful detail in their designs.

One recent launch which just exploded on social media is the collaboration of Rifle Paper and Garance Dore, the first out of Florida and the second designer based in Paris. They recently premiered their line in Paris and I’m excited to check out the products in person while attending the New York show this Spring.

Peace & Snow

Over the years, my Yearly Planners have become something of a journal, holding not only appointments but also lists of Things-To-Do, goals for a season, recipes to try, etc., with never enough room to keep what’s juggling in my head. So when I noticed the Emily Ley’s Simplified Planner on The Paper Chronicles my interest perked up.

ELSimplifiedPlanner_04-640x420.jpeg

Although I’m usually more of a black or blue covered russell&hazel Calendar gal, there is such thought and organization in this book I embraced the spirited, rainbow cover.  Last night as I began entering my 2014 appointments and unloading the Things-To-Do lists from my noggin’ into the well-designed, hard covered book, a peace rushed through me. This planner not only offers a calendar but opportunities to balance the rest of my life. Finally, a gal who understands the needs of life yet keeping true to the paper and pen.  And since the excitement over the planner has been so great, Emily is offering a discount on orders being shipped in 2014. Thanks fellow paper enthusiast!!

voila party

My co-pilot and I are opposite when it comes to blogging. He has the wit, and at times bizarre, inside-baseball kind of humor. Me, I’m more practical and sing-songy. Nick handwrites all his posts before logging in and I, on the other hand, need to type when organizing my thoughts (I realize, a bit anti-Brown Ink). Nick stores all his ideas in his head. For me, I collect ideas and store them under a specific category using my awesome filing system (with the help from russell&hazel file folders).

Funny enough, even with well-intended folders spilling over with post ideas, for me it always comes down to what feels fresh at the time. I often wait for the right topic to knock me over. So this past week, buried under stationery catalogues while narrowing down the goods to premiere on Brown Ink this fall (so excited!!), I had no time or room to let an idea surface. But leave it to a morning run to solve or at least sort out my present problems. Summer humidity finally arrived and out came my need for a summer party…voila. Who doesn’t love a little social gathering in the heat of the season!?!

invite1 Take the time to handwrite an invite! I used these invitations from MARA-MI for a Bon Voyage party for my neighbors this spring. I adore the origami and gold foil print inside the envelope.

Letterpressed Neon Coasters - "Bottoms up"

These chic, neon coasters from Haute Papier use an added touch with the letterpress handwriting.

Find a way to make a statement as your guests arrive. A good friend of mine welcomed her friends by using chalkboard paint in her front entrance. An easy feel good.

Find chalkboard paint around town or make it temporary with peel & stick boards

Of course, if your party has many people chatting it up with one another, they will love the napkin notes for the last minute thought, much easier than digging for you iphone to message yourself.

With these food writing pens, your handwriting is actually edible!

If you’re not a big Thank You note writer, make it simple by shooting a photo with the host and send a card using inkFelt, RedStamp, or Postagram, all phone or tablet apps which send an old-fashioned written card, on real paper, delivered by a mail carrier. All before you exit the party.

Let the festivities begin….

Pops

With many Moms finally finding some air after a hectic end-of-school-year season, the energy output continues on with Father’s Day only 10 days away. I thought a few gift tips might be helpful. Let’s begin with cards…

Father's Day Fly Fishing Card

I’m crazy about the Fly Fishing Father’s Day card created by the Floridian folks at Rifle Paper Co

Make it! Fancy Father’s Day Card

This DIY Father’s Day Card from Moomah is pretty darn sweet and not too difficult for even me!

Portland, OR’s Quill & Fox has created the perfect card for the coffee-loving father

Image of Father's Day, 1003Image of Father's Day, 1001

For the humorous dad, these memorable cards from local Old Tom Foolery will be appreciated

And now the treats…

These Kraft Notes from Kikkerland Design are classic, a must for any high-styling dad these days

And while you’re on their site, include a Matchstick Pen with your order for a little gift topper!  (bonus: use coupon code FATHERS13 for 20% off, order by June 9th)

Restoration Hardware ate their Smart Pills when creating the Chalkboard Door Hanger. The kids might not like this one, but Dad will. Just think, he can write out the message the night before “Start coffee machine. Watch cartoons until 8.” And all might be calm in the house just a wee bit longer…Imagine.

Yoda Essential Notebook - Small

A quote from the beloved Star Wars on anything will put smiles on the Brown boys’ faces especially when to comes to a Father’s Day gift idea. Thankfully, the Yoda Essential Handbook seals the deal. You can even monogram the book for free! Love.

Anti-Gravity Space Pen

And while you’re shuffling around my new favorite Owen & Fred website, why don’t you pick up an Anti-Gravity Space Pen so Dad can feel a little Neal Armstrongesque on an off…or on day.

BLUE FLY A6 NOTE CARDS

If Dad is like most men out there, he’s lacking in the stationery department. Why not surprise him with a handsome, engraved Blue Fly note card from Terrapin Stationers?

Or for the sailor, the Golden Nautical card set is elegant and sporty

For New York Yankees fans, this Vintage Yankee Stadium Seat Pen was created from authentic wooden seats salvaged from the stadium before ’73 when the seats turned to plastic. The disc at the top even features the original blue paint.

For the final touch, check out the latest design coming out of the USPS.

Every year over 140,000 images are sent to the USPS for consideration as a stamp. The latest Johnny Cash Forever Stamp was a standout for obvious reasons.

Of course, there is no reason anyone needs to spend a dollar on this day….

Have the kids create an IOU or coupon for projects around the home or look here for a printable Father’s Day Check like the one above.

The best gifts of all are the handwritten ones in my mind. A poem, one sentence “I love you Dad” sentiment from a child, a list of the favorite attributes of your father. After he’s loved and enjoyed on this holiday, tape the written thoughts in Dad’s medicine cabinet, frame the words for his office desk, or place them in his glove compartment. These are reminders, created by the hand and heart, of the most important part of life.

(PS – If you’re looking for even more gift ideas, check out my list from last year for inspiration.)

we love our Mothers

Mother’s Day is only two weeks away. So I thought I might share some ideas which hopefully will be passed on to the fathers, husbands or in-laws in your lives.

First off, I can’t more strongly suggest gifting your mother this Phone Pouchette from russell+hazel. I know, I know, I’m preaching technology but just listen…

phone1This has become my go-to when it comes to note taking outside of the home. And it can easily act as a purse with the interior slots for business or credit cards. Handsome and functional. And for a mother (no mention of names) who misplaces her phone from time to time, you will always know where your phone is ringing and where you last scribbled out an appointment or two.

My mother tends to subtlety “hint” at what she might like for Mother’s Day. Lucky for me, she’s in need of stationery!!! Love that kind of research.

Peacock Feather Pattern Flat Notes-set of 8

These Peacock Feather Pattern note cards from Michelle Brusegaard are lovely for a note to a loved one.

letter1I grew up near the Walker Art Center so my mother was known to reproduce art pieces which spoke to her (once she even painted a canvas orange and stuck a piece of toast right in the center of the painting). This lovely Mekko Note Card from MARA-MI reminds me of a piece she would have replicated.

sally1

My mother-in-law, also a Walker fan, would easily enjoy sending these Piet Note Cards to any one of her lucky friends.

mom2I don’t know a mother who wouldn’t be thrilled to receive these Valencia Note Cards which scream spring has arrived.

(All three MARA-MI cards can be found at their flagship store in Stillwater or their sister store, russell+hazel, in Minneapolis.)

coral letterpress notecard

I’m crazy about this elegant, letterpress Coral note card from Fig & Tulip.

Here’s a little something to help send off a letter in style…

imm living arcadian pig stamp

Mad about the pig stamp from imm living. I mean, come on? I would find excuses to use this cute little Wilbur on any rainy day!

Here’s an idea. Not only surprise the mom in your life with an unexpected trip but plant the airline ticket in this handsome Traveler’s Notebook from Baum-kuchen. An unforgettable Mother’s Day gift, no doubt.

journal_akolamarketThe beautiful selection of journals from Matta are covered with archive fabrics filled with market paper. (Why not pick up a scarf before you click off the site!)

Most mothers these days have some sort of stress on their minds. You can help by gifting her a Massage Pen from Kikkerland with an actual vibrating massager at the tip! (now 20% off site-wide with coupon code MOMSDAY13)

acrylic_pen_holder_80647[1]

For the mom who likes to keep an orderly desk, the slick acrylic pen and pencil holder from Russel+Hazel makes your writing utensils look like art.

Copper Foil Recipe Cards - product images

Why not send your adult daughter a few family recipes on these copper foil recipe cards from Yellow Owl Workshop?

Sometimes a few words is all a Mother needs to receive. Which is why Shanna Murray illustrated decals is a wonderful gift for any mother figure in your life!

Of course no gift is complete without a card…

Make it! Blooming Mother’s Day Card

I love this Blooming Mother’s Day Card from Moomah. It’s a little DIY project, possibly a perfect card from a grandchild!

I Heart Mom from Gold Teeth Brooklyn

But when it comes down to it, we feel the written expression is the most authentic and meaningful. A Mother of any form or nature will cherish this reminder of love.
