Back to Business

After dropping my youngest child off at her new school yesterday morning, (the last of the three start dates for our children), Summer had officially come to an end in my book. Even though the season flashed by in a blink, did it feel right? Oh yes. Were there tears? Plenty. But I’m a gal who craves routines, clear intervals, and all kinds of new beginnings.

After an enjoyable and most needed pause from blogging over the past few months, I’m ready to connect with you all once again!  So let’s begin with a few of my recent favorites…

SONY DSC

Kick off the season with one of Rad and Hungry’s top Picks for the Fall. The USA Booster Pack even includes vintage US postage stamps; three-color engraving from a single plate on a Giori Press makes these stamps beautifully textured and unique!

There are currently twelve Master Penmen in the entire world and Jake Weidmann is the youngest. This guy not only has talent but also a passion for writing by hand. (My favorite quote: “If you don’t teach your child handwriting, the thoughts that they develop when they wish to communicate through a computer will vanish as soon as they touch the keyboard.”)

Was that just a pencil being Instagrammed from the hot, Manhattan CW Pencil Enterprise? The Guardian‘s Fashion Editor, Jess Cartner-Morley, believes fashion’s fetish for paper goods has surprisingly survived the rise of technology. (Cheers Tyler!)

Why not be earth-conscious when sending your child off to school or adding to your office supplies with these Nature Made Eco Erasers created out of old scallop shells in Hokkaido, Japan from eco-friendly Grey Ray.

Swooning over the Rifle Paper Co. Folk 2016 calendar, soon to be seen on Brown Ink Paper Goods!

So here’s to fresh starts, sharpened No.2 Pencils, and slowing down. Yes, you heard me. Summer is a season for constant motion, road trips, too much sun, and late night gatherings. Let’s embrace these shorter days, quieter moments and getting back to business!

Mum’s the Word

Mother’s Day has become one of my favorite days. Not only to celebrate my own mother but also give thanks and blessings to all the mothers in my world who make life good. So let’s start with the most important item of the day – the card! We brought on a few new ones this year…

Crazy for the floral pastels in Gorgeous Mama card from Our Heiday!

A new designer to Brown Ink Paper Goods, Ashkahn creates memorable cards such as this Best Mom Ever with gold foil and trademark pink fluorescent envelope. Love.

In another collaboration with Pomegranate Press, we added this beauty to the Brown Ink Paper Goods line with lemon yellow and rubine red inks! You can even use on mom’s Birthday or any other day for that matter.

Of course we had to bring back a few favorites from last year such as…

Peach Happy Mother’s Day from Rifle Paper Co. and…

the silhouette i love you mom card from Quill & Fox!

If I know most Moms, we need notepads, journals & writing utensils to bring peace to our lives.

Who wouldn’t enjoy writing their To-Do list on a gold foil, letterpress paper from Le Typogrpahe?

Of course, my all-time favorite journals are from Twigg’s Bindery, the forever journals. Use these pages for a writing project with your mother, recalling her memories of childhood and your shared moments from growing up, adding pictures or memorabilia in the years to come. (BTW, these journals are now HOT on Martha Stewart American Made site!)

Don’t forget to include a pen or pencil to make your gift a thoughtful set!

More on ideas to make a mother feel special in the coming weeks. Cheerio.

XOXOXO Take #1

Valentine’s Day is top dog, head honcho when it comes to writing and sharing cards. For me, the true essence of the day is for one to express their love in any form of writing…create a hand-made, eye-popping elaborate, magazine-size card, buy a shiny, single love note at the corner store, or simply cut a solo heart out of red construction paper. You really can’t go wrong however you acknowledge your loved ones. And although it’s about the written words of love, why stop there when the options are endless for Valentine’s Day correspondence!

My favorite design I’ve seen this season is from Georgia-based Brown Parcel Press. Inspired by the sweet Valentine’s handed out as a grade schooler, the founder, Megan, created this unique Pillow Talk Valentine’s Card Set so one can easily tie a chocolate, caramel or flower on top of the gorgeous letterpress card. So clever yet so traditional.

A Good Trio

Rain, flowers, and Mother’s Day season. A pretty ideal trio in my world (well, ideally no rain on the actual holiday but not minding the soothing, non-stop pitter-patter today!). And when it comes to Mother’s Day, cards and flowers are all I honestly want…and maybe an hour of alone time with the Sunday Times and a Dogwood latte…with an Egg & Cheese Biscuit Sandwich from Sun Street Breads por favor (a bit of a subtle hint, sorry family!). Did I mention a mimosa?

With my love of celebrating the Mother figures in all our lives, we’ve added Mum’s Day cards at Brown Ink Paper Goods. One from our favorite Portland, Oregon stationery lines, Quill & Fox, and the others from Rifle Paper Co. Yes Yes!! Brown Ink recently launched this line out of Winter Park, Florida. Being a fan for years, I couldn’t wait until the National Stationery Show to place my order. The products we selected are recently new to Rifle Paper. With such amazing illustrations, their products hold an exquisite balance of hand-painted illustrations and timeless lettering, while creating each piece as environmentally friendly as possible. I once read an article in Sous Style about Anna Bond, one of the co-owners, where the designer mentioned part of her creative process is to write down her thoughts in journals before starting to paint anything. “It’s funny because most of my sketchbooks are just filled with words.” It all comes around.

Returning to Mother’s Day cards, another heartfelt option is to purchase a card which gives back to an organization such as the Greater Minneapolis Crisis Nursery.

MotherDay

This card honors the recipient with a donation made to the Crisis Nursery, a gift that will continue to give. There might be no better and easier way to spread thankfulness on this day.

If you are looking for additional gift ideas….

…you will find us here along with other local friends at the elegant yet always comfortable Room No. 3 on May 7th to enjoy bubbly, juices, tunes and some pretty awesome give-aways.

And don’t forget to purchase tickets to our Hamms Event a week from Saturday!! #HAMMS2014

So start some seeds, buy a card, and write. In the end, the words become our most valuable gift.
