Summertime Bounty

Last night while the Brown family ate dinner on the porch (roughly 7.5 minutes before the kids jetted off to play in the yard!), we began counting the weeks left in Summer. Yes, I’m aware this conversation was taking place way too early! But here’s the simple truth…Minnesotans have both the beauty and frustration of living with clear beginnings and endings to the four seasons. Summer is fast, fun, messy, full, exhausting and tremendously entertaining.

Which is why I’ve decided to take a temporary pause from blogging over the next two months and spend more time with my three young children, handwriting as much as possible, sharing the bounty of our garden and participating in the family circus. You’ll still hear from Brown Ink Paper Goods regarding a sale or two over the Summer (check out the latest discounts here!) and posting new products on Instagram, TwitterPinterest, and Facebook. Otherwise, I’ll rejoin you all in late August. Until then, put the phone down and let your closet, inner-youth take over whenever possible! Before I leave you, here are a few highlights from the past month worth checking out…

Boogie Nights

It snowed last night in my hometown and the world has become a quieter place. Perfect timing I’d say. After all the energy we put into the holidays, a bit of slowing down is much needed, at least in our house. I’m not suggesting we don’t give end-of-the-year celebrations their due, but perhaps we’ll end 2014 with a reflective, thoughtful spirit.

If you’re gathering folks on the 31st, these DIY written hearts from Oh So Beautiful Paper may inspire a few New Year’s intentions or at least ignite conversation among guests.

I love a good house cleanse and these smudge sticks will do the trick. Write a note to your guests, welcoming 2015 as they may clear out any negative energy from the past year. Thanks for the idea, Of-a-Kind ladies.

These inspirational New Year’s Eve Confetti Fortune Pockets from Design Sponge are gorgeous and a completely playful DIY idea, a perfect party favor to kick off the new year.

If you’re looking to pick up party decor for New Year’s, head to Red Stamp for all your paper needs (And fabulous digital invites since it’s a bit late for paper. Shhh, I didn’t they say that!).

Although I love a good party, I welcome a clean slate even more – (Wow, you’d think I was a bit of a bore, although my husband will remind me I’ve gone out dancing twice into the wee hours just in the past week! I know, every so often I’m crazy like that.).

The new year brings a clean calendar, it provides one a moment to breathe, take note, and forces a certain reflection of how we are walking through life. Now having two kids in grade school, bringing family into a conversation about resolutions is appealing. The always inspiring Gabrielle Blair from Design Mom created an idea on how to involve your children during this time of reflection.

new-year-clock-time

Her family keeps a journal which they open around the New Year, where they include their daydreams and goals, providing a simple format to see where they have grown over the past year. I may give it a try myself…at the moment our children are floating somewhere between the sledding hills, Christmas gifts and multiple holiday-break-movie-nights. Although they may not fully understand the idea of “becoming better people” through New Year’s resolutions, as Gabrielle suggests, perhaps the process of handwriting their intentions will reinforce the idea they actually have a bit of a say over their own direction in life.

Here’s to a beautiful 2015 – A year of more writing, reflection, and knowledge of oneself. As for me, I plan to include a few more boogie nights to keep me young! Cheers.

The Best of The National Stationery Show Part 2

I’m back with more highlights from my whirlwind weekend in NYC this past May. Let’s first start with a line I can’t wait to debut later this month on Brown Ink…

The creative and local force behind Old Tom Foolery launched a new line last year, Modern Lore, which brings in fresh imagery from different photographers throughout the country.

The Best of National Stationery Show 2014, Part 1

Highlighting my trip to New York City for the National Stationery Show is not a simple task. With all the new trends and unexpected surprises to share, compiling it into one post is impossible. That said, I’ll share some of my favorite lines I spotted last month at the Javits Convention Center through a series of posts over the next few weeks. Enjoy!!

Once again, Christine from Yellow Owl Workshop worked her magic and talent within this gorgeous display space (it took her and an assistant only 2 hours to hand paint the booth!)

One line soon to join the Brown Ink Paper Goods boutique is Linda & Harriett out of Brooklyn, NY. We weren’t the only ones at the show crazy for the 2015 Painted Letterpress Calendars! In general, calendars appear to be the new rage, taking the place of the faithful recipe cards.

Cowgirl

I dream nearly every night and often remember a good chunk of my dreams. Lately I seem to be traveling to warm destinations (imagine that). The other night in the middle of some deep snores, I found myself in New York City strolling thru hundreds of booths filled with ink and paper at the National Stationery Show. Thankfully this image will become a reality this coming May and I cannot wait. This being my second year of attending, I’m still a new cowgirl to the rodeo but ready as ever.

One of the reasons I’ve been dreaming of the Javits Convention Center (vs. the beach) is my love of checking out highlights from this past year’s Gift Shows. I often head to the paper goods blog, Oh So Beautiful Paper, which summarizes each show with thought, diversity and lots of good eye candy. I’ve got my eye on a handful this year…

Sapling Press

Speaking of hot stationery lines swirling around out there, here are a few others which keep pulling me in…

The folks from Philadelphia based, Wayfare Press, bring a love of paper and youth to their designs.

Satsuma Press has also been top of mind these days, such beautiful detail in their designs.

One recent launch which just exploded on social media is the collaboration of Rifle Paper and Garance Dore, the first out of Florida and the second designer based in Paris. They recently premiered their line in Paris and I’m excited to check out the products in person while attending the New York show this Spring.
