Bullet Journaling…it’s all that

I’m a list maker by nature so when my friend recently mentioned the hot trend of Bullet Journaling I was intrigued. Life for me consists of multiple lists and jotted ideas which aren’t necessarily located in the same location. Instead, they’re found beside my bed, on our office desk, in the bottom of my purse (where I could fit a small child) or in my head. I haven’t completely goofed on a major commitment, at least not yet, but the need for one common depot to house the lists in my life is apparent. Thankfully, from what I’ve begun to learn, the Bullet Journal is so much more than a simple notebook.

This modern day version of a Day-Timer, the Bullet Journal became all the rage a few years ago after thousands watched a YouTube video with interest and devotees have been gaining ever since. Call it a backlash to our digital age (where Moleskin has seen double the revenue in the past five years), this old-school organizational system is completely personal while being used for one’s to-do list, sketchbook, notebook, diary, or all of the above. Without going into the full details of the journal’s capabilities (the video is worth a watch!), Bullet Journaling works because of its unique flexibility and adaptability, holding thoughts, ideas, day dreams, goals and your schedule in one place.

When searching for #bulletjournal or cruising their Instagram account, you’ll find a plethora of ideas and examples of how people use a Bullet Journal. From artsy calendars and uber-gorgeous list making to exercise tracker or Rapid Logging. For me, I’m taking baby-steps broken down into three areas; the Future Log for an overall glance at the month ahead, the Daily Log for my week ahead (basically, my Things To Do Lists with task bullets I get to complete with a nice, solid X!) and Collections for larger projects in the making. If I decide to expand my needs in the journal, there is always room for more writing.

Honestly, there is no need to buy expensive supples if you are already content with your current notebook. The system created is truly the heart of the Bullet Journal. However, I do have to say I’m a fan of both the dot grid lines and the strength and beauty of the hardcover journals…the cheat sheet in the opening pages is also a nice reminder of how to organize each list.

Is this for everyone? Not necessarily. It does not fit in the back of trousers, it takes effort and, perhaps, a new organizational skill. But for me, it meets all my requirements by both writing items down, which forces my mind to process the information, as well as  creating order in my life. Whether you’re a list maker or not, give this a shot!  w

P.S. For you locals, Brown Ink Paper Goods cards is joining forces with other makers in Spring Market this Sunday (invite only, please email me for info) as well as a Mother’s Day Market next weekend! Come out and support your local makers!!

    Mum’s the Word

Mother’s Day has become one of my favorite days. Not only to celebrate my own mother but also give thanks and blessings to all the mothers in my world who make life good. So let’s start with the most important item of the day – the card! We brought on a few new ones this year…

Of course we had to bring back a few favorites from last year such as…

If I know most Moms, we need notepads, journals & writing utensils to bring peace to our lives.

Of course, my all-time favorite journals are from Twigg’s Bindery, the forever journals. Use these pages for a writing project with your mother, recalling her memories of childhood and your shared moments from growing up, adding pictures or memorabilia in the years to come. (BTW, these journals are now HOT on Martha Stewart American Made site!)

Don’t forget to include a pen or pencil to make your gift a thoughtful set!

More on ideas to make a mother feel special in the coming weeks. Cheerio.

      Local Goodness

We are beginning to see some light here in the Twin Cities. The sun actually showed its face for an hour today. It is time to remove ourselves from under the covers and check out all that is local!! Of course, we are thrilled to be a part of the Makers Market at the lovely Mille in South Minneapolis once again, next Saturday, May 10th from 12 – 5.

      makers_may01

This time we have something special for you at Makers Market. Brown Ink has teamed up with one of our favorite flower designers, limoni limoni, a flower business created by Mahsa Hansen, to provide a perfect and thoughtful gift just in time for Mother’s Day.

      llfloral2

Trained as a graphic designer and with experience at some of the best firms in town, Mahsa’s unique vision of color and design is apparent in all of her bouquets. It’s a dream to combine our designs!

      llfloral3

limoni limoni is offering two sizes of bouquets: a Coffee table size Hand Tied Bouquet for $55 and a dramatic mix Hand Tied Bouquet for $85, both pick-up arrangements. The first 10 preorders will receive a bonus gift of a Brown Ink Mother’s Day card..

      llfloral

To order, email Mahsa at limonilimoni@me.com before May 8th and pick up your bouquets at Mille during the market.  Your wife or mum will be beaming and touched, no doubt!

Just a reminder, make sure to visit us at the HAMMS Event tomorrow with loads of Minnesota Makers, food, beer and more, (four legged friends welcomed).  As well as the Room No. 3 Lovin’ Local event next Wednesday evening.

        A Good Trio

Rain, flowers, and Mother’s Day season. A pretty ideal trio in my world (well, ideally no rain on the actual holiday but not minding the soothing, non-stop pitter-patter today!). And when it comes to Mother’s Day, cards and flowers are all I honestly want…and maybe an hour of alone time with the Sunday Times and a Dogwood latte…with an Egg & Cheese Biscuit Sandwich from Sun Street Breads por favor (a bit of a subtle hint, sorry family!). Did I mention a mimosa?

With my love of celebrating the Mother figures in all our lives, we’ve added Mum’s Day cards at Brown Ink Paper Goods. One from our favorite Portland, Oregon stationery lines, Quill & Fox, and the others from Rifle Paper Co. Yes Yes!! Brown Ink recently launched this line out of Winter Park, Florida. Being a fan for years, I couldn’t wait until the National Stationery Show to place my order. The products we selected are recently new to Rifle Paper. With such amazing illustrations, their products hold an exquisite balance of hand-painted illustrations and timeless lettering, while creating each piece as environmentally friendly as possible. I once read an article in Sous Style about Anna Bond, one of the co-owners, where the designer mentioned part of her creative process is to write down her thoughts in journals before starting to paint anything. “It’s funny because most of my sketchbooks are just filled with words.” It all comes around.

Returning to Mother’s Day cards, another heartfelt option is to purchase a card which gives back to an organization such as the Greater Minneapolis Crisis Nursery.

        MotherDay

This card honors the recipient with a donation made to the Crisis Nursery, a gift that will continue to give. There might be no better and easier way to spread thankfulness on this day.

If you are looking for additional gift ideas….

…you will find us here along with other local friends at the elegant yet always comfortable Room No. 3 on May 7th to enjoy bubbly, juices, tunes and some pretty awesome give-aways.

        hammsherlife

And don’t forget to purchase tickets to our Hamms Event a week from Saturday!! #HAMMS2014

So start some seeds, buy a card, and write. In the end, the words become our most valuable gift.

          we love our Mothers

Mother’s Day is only two weeks away. So I thought I might share some ideas which hopefully will be passed on to the fathers, husbands or in-laws in your lives.

First off, I can’t more strongly suggest gifting your mother this Phone Pouchette from russell+hazel. I know, I know, I’m preaching technology but just listen…

phone1This has become my go-to when it comes to note taking outside of the home. And it can easily act as a purse with the interior slots for business or credit cards. Handsome and functional. And for a mother (no mention of names) who misplaces her phone from time to time, you will always know where your phone is ringing and where you last scribbled out an appointment or two.

My mother tends to subtlety “hint” at what she might like for Mother’s Day. Lucky for me, she’s in need of stationery!!! Love that kind of research.

Peacock Feather Pattern Flat Notes-set of 8

These Peacock Feather Pattern note cards from Michelle Brusegaard are lovely for a note to a loved one.

letter1I grew up near the Walker Art Center so my mother was known to reproduce art pieces which spoke to her (once she even painted a canvas orange and stuck a piece of toast right in the center of the painting). This lovely Mekko Note Card from MARA-MI reminds me of a piece she would have replicated.

          sally1

My mother-in-law, also a Walker fan, would easily enjoy sending these Piet Note Cards to any one of her lucky friends.

mom2I don’t know a mother who wouldn’t be thrilled to receive these Valencia Note Cards which scream spring has arrived.

(All three MARA-MI cards can be found at their flagship store in Stillwater or their sister store, russell+hazel, in Minneapolis.)

          coral letterpress notecard

I’m crazy about this elegant, letterpress Coral note card from Fig & Tulip.

Here’s a little something to help send off a letter in style…

          imm living arcadian pig stamp

Mad about the pig stamp from imm living. I mean, come on? I would find excuses to use this cute little Wilbur on any rainy day!

Here’s an idea. Not only surprise the mom in your life with an unexpected trip but plant the airline ticket in this handsome Traveler’s Notebook from Baum-kuchen. An unforgettable Mother’s Day gift, no doubt.

journal_akolamarketThe beautiful selection of journals from Matta are covered with archive fabrics filled with market paper. (Why not pick up a scarf before you click off the site!)

Most mothers these days have some sort of stress on their minds. You can help by gifting her a Massage Pen from Kikkerland with an actual vibrating massager at the tip! (now 20% off site-wide with coupon code MOMSDAY13)

          acrylic_pen_holder_80647[1]

For the mom who likes to keep an orderly desk, the slick acrylic pen and pencil holder from Russel+Hazel makes your writing utensils look like art.

Copper Foil Recipe Cards - product images

Why not send your adult daughter a few family recipes on these copper foil recipe cards from Yellow Owl Workshop?

Sometimes a few words is all a Mother needs to receive. Which is why Shanna Murray illustrated decals is a wonderful gift for any mother figure in your life!

Of course no gift is complete without a card…

Make it! Blooming Mother’s Day Card

I love this Blooming Mother’s Day Card from Moomah. It’s a little DIY project, possibly a perfect card from a grandchild!

          Rosy Blooms Mother's Day Card

          Rosy Blooms from Rifle Paper

          Lipstick Mother’s Day

Lipstick Mothers Day from rocket ink

I Heart Mom from Gold Teeth Brooklyn

But when it comes down to it, we feel the written expression is the most authentic and meaningful. A Mother of any form or nature will cherish this reminder of love.
