My Life in a Binder

Last week I received an email from my friend Kristin stating the following…“I need to look at investing in a good daytime planner. I’m not tech-y and put all my appointments/reminders in my phone.  I’m old school – need to write it and look at it daily, hoping to NEVER lose it as it contains everything in my life!  I like a size to fit into a mid-size purse. In the past I’ve gotten one at Russel+Hazel and loved it but it was cloth and got too dirty. Thoughts? I’d love to hear if you’ve seen any at stationery markets, have through Brown Ink, etc.”

Being an old-school daytime planner woman myself, I loved receiving this email! I’m also a  research fanatic when it comes to paper goods so this email sent me into mission mode. And perfect timing too as 2015 winds down and our hungry little fingers are scratching for planners for the coming year! Of course, I could go on and on about why I believe a paper day planner is the only go-to – But today I will simply stay on track and stick with the mission at hand.

First, I do use the russell+hazel day Mini SmartDate system which Kristin refers to…and it carries my life as well! Does it get a little dirty? A bit, but thankfully the Mini Solid Color Binder in gray hides most smudges and I actually enjoy the roughed-up look (plus the store sells brightly colored folders and tabs which freshen up the binder!). However, there are several day planners to select from in all different shapes and colors..

Target-2016-13-770x810

The Paper Chronicles recently featured the 2016 Edition of Sugar Paper at Target and it’s stunning. These LA gals are Queens of classy perfection as you can see in their designs. Make sure you head to Target November 1st to load up on calendars and accessories for the new year!Target-2016-09Target-2016-04

On the other spectrum of fancy, rumor has it the Smythson 2016 Soho Agenda (specifically in bright yellow) is Sofia Coppola’s must-have for her 2016 planner needs!

Emily Ley is a one woman, power house in the world of day planners.

A few years ago I used an older version of her Simplified Planner which, although colorful and well constructed, was a monster to haul. Emily was smart with her revised Simplified Planner being a bit smaller yet keeping the best parts: spiral binding to lay binder flat, attention to detail, quality paper, and ample space to write. Bravo Lady!

A similarly styled planner – and extremely affordable – can be found at Sarah Pinto.

The 17 month Birch Floral Everyday Planner from Rifle Paper is both beautiful and functional.

And sometimes you just need to write out the happenings of each day one week at a time. The Rifle Floral Weekly Planner is perfect for this scenario.

Of course, there are those, like my mother-in-law, who find wall calendars the most convenient and enjoyable way to both view and organize the days and weeks ahead.  I do love a pretty wall calendar not only for the art but also to be reminded what day it is!

Whatever suits your needs it’s out there!! Bottom line, nothing beats crossing off, (with an actual pen), an appointment or date which you were hoping might pass or inking in a birthday, gathering or trip you can’t wait to take place! It’s our lives in one binder. Thanks for the reminder, Kristin, of why daily planners are here to stay.

Cherry Red Cheeks

This Summer has become one of exploration. I’ve allowed myself to take some time away from my blog, Pinterest and the digital world by placing energy in new areas. From a painting series, pottery 101, piano lessons (a first since 9th grade), long bike rides around the city, and finding a new overseas Pen Pal, my mind and body are embracing the change in the current pace.

However, my enthusiasm for all the gorgeous, new products which hit our store last week is impossible to contain! Make sure to check out the main Shop page for a glimpse of fresh paper goods as well a handful of new Designers. A few of my new favorites for now…

Here’s to celebrating the season…lemonade stands, evening bike rides, dips in the lake, journal writing on the porch in your PJs, sand in toes, cherry red cheeks and dirty knees. Throw in a postcard from the Grand Canyon and you got yourself a good, old memorable Summer.

The Best of National Stationery Show 2014, Part 1

Highlighting my trip to New York City for the National Stationery Show is not a simple task. With all the new trends and unexpected surprises to share, compiling it into one post is impossible. That said, I’ll share some of my favorite lines I spotted last month at the Javits Convention Center through a series of posts over the next few weeks. Enjoy!!

Once again, Christine from Yellow Owl Workshop worked her magic and talent within this gorgeous display space (it took her and an assistant only 2 hours to hand paint the booth!)

Emily McDowell was the show-stopper this year. With her beautiful and thoughtful hand lettered paper goods, this booth was consistently well packed with attendees.

Pineapples were popping up everywhere this year, but Hartland Brooklyn was my favorite! Emily from Hartland Brooklyn freshened up her pink neon with a new South Pacific direction.

One line soon to join the Brown Ink Paper Goods boutique is Linda & Harriett out of Brooklyn, NY. We weren’t the only ones at the show crazy for the 2015 Painted Letterpress Calendars! In general, calendars appear to be the new rage, taking the place of the faithful recipe cards.

Another soon-to-debut line on Brown Ink is Ferme a Papier. With its Tahitian-Parisian inspired collection, these lovely bold colors kept drawing me back each day to visit with creator Cat Seto.

It’s Time to Celebrate

I returned home Tuesday night after attending the National Stationery Show and I am completely enthused from all I encountered. Thrilled for the new designers who will soon join the Brown Ink Paper Goods boutique as well as fresh work from our current lines. It’s all so good, especially to see the world of handwriting and paper goods alive and well. Before I share my favorites from the show, let’s move on to a few pressing matters at hand; gifts for the graduate or teacher in your life. A few ideas, starting with the graduate…

The Personalized Handwriting Necklace is a lovely gift for the young adult who may need a bit of family (mother, father, grandmother) close to her heart as she heads off to college.

For the craftsman in the family, send a student off with this do-it-yourself wooden base desk lamp, thanks to the minds behind Poppy Talk. It’s handsome, functional and handmade with love. Also ideal size for the dorm room desk (Make sure to include of few of these below!).

Of course, no Graduate should leave for college without a collection of fine pens or pencils….

delfonicblue2_1024x1024

The Delfonic pen and pencil selection is perfect for both College Freshmen and Freshwomen who’d like to appear both smart and hip even if they are writing vs. typing.

A writing journal is a beautiful gift for a Graduate. They might be even more likely to download the numerous changes in their new lives’ with this proper and stylish journal by their side.

Leather Journals made by Twigg’s Bindery are simply stunning, a keeper for lifetime. Or a larger, Fabric Journal can hold concert stubs, airline tickets and other memorabilia (as a side note, Jonna Twigg just won Best New Product Award for this Fabric Journal at the Stationery Show!).

There may be a greater chance you’ll hear a few snippets of your child’s life if you send them off with stationery they will actually enjoy using like this Road Trip set from Scouts Honor Co.

And include a dozen stamps while you’re at it (what 18 year-old doesn’t love a little Jimi Hendrix?).

For the glorious Teachers….

Handwritten Teacher Name Stamp created by St.Paulite letter girl will be well loved and used.

For the teacher who appreciates a handwritten letter, the recently released Letters of Note would be a beautiful summer read, filled with extraordinary letters which will fill their soul.

KAT9719_1024x1024

For Teachers with more freedom in the Summer, a Journal can be a needed creative outlet.

painted-boxes-6.1

Gabrielle from Design Mom came up with these beautiful DIY painted pencil boxes. A great project with a child over the weekend. Add in a few pencils and note from their student, and you’ll find yourself a happy, full-hearted Teacher.

You could even include a lovely stationery set which fits the personality of the Teacher…

Gifts are always lovely but, from what I’ve been told, a written letter from a student is the best gift a Teacher could ask for on any day.

Of course, a few handfuls of these sparkles from The Great Lakes Goods never hurts! Let’s CELEBRATE these accomplished individuals, the Graduates and Teachers who have made us proud.

Cowgirl

I dream nearly every night and often remember a good chunk of my dreams. Lately I seem to be traveling to warm destinations (imagine that). The other night in the middle of some deep snores, I found myself in New York City strolling thru hundreds of booths filled with ink and paper at the National Stationery Show. Thankfully this image will become a reality this coming May and I cannot wait. This being my second year of attending, I’m still a new cowgirl to the rodeo but ready as ever.

One of the reasons I’ve been dreaming of the Javits Convention Center (vs. the beach) is my love of checking out highlights from this past year’s Gift Shows. I often head to the paper goods blog, Oh So Beautiful Paper, which summarizes each show with thought, diversity and lots of good eye candy. I’ve got my eye on a handful this year…

Sapling Press

Speaking of hot stationery lines swirling around out there, here are a few others which keep pulling me in…

photo123

The folks from Philadelphia based, Wayfare Press, bring a love of paper and youth to their designs.

Satsuma Press has also been top of mind these days, such beautiful detail in their designs.

One recent launch which just exploded on social media is the collaboration of Rifle Paper and Garance Dore, the first out of Florida and the second designer based in Paris. They recently premiered their line in Paris and I’m excited to check out the products in person while attending the New York show this Spring.

Lastly, to fellow Twin Citians, are you looking for another good reason to get out from under the covers this weekend? The second monthly Makers Market is taking place over at Mille

We’ll be there, bringing with us a nice batch of Sale items as well. Make sure to swing by!
