A Holiday in My World

Did you know today is a holiday? Honestly. Well, in my mind today’s National Handwriting Day should be an official, full-fledged, no school, and no screens kind of a holiday where everyone sits down at a pub, bus stop, or front steps and writes. I’m well aware my dreams are big. However, in honoring this day I’m revealing the expansion of my own letterpress line, Brown Ink Paper Goods!

My love of letterpress stationery, while incorporating vintage printing blocks, has not slowed a bit since the launch of the store. Thanks to my dear friend Jean Glenn, from Pomegranate Press, we’ve come up with a beautiful line of cards for everyone for any occasion.

Many styles of the collection were revealed at NorthernGrade in November and were met with authentic excitement! I will be introducing more styles as the year unfolds so keep a look out.

Our new Valentine’s card from the With Love collection is hot off the press. Jean and I decided to give another level of personal touch to each card by dipping these beautiful cotton pieces into Cherry Kool-Aid. This Dipped Love is my new favorite by far!

Here’s to keeping handwriting alive in anyway I can. Enjoy the holiday weekend fellow writers!

Spring Pause

Spring has sprung…I think. At least the melting process has begun up here in the north country.  This seems like the perfect time to stretch out that writing hand of yours and write a simple card.  Reach out to a friend you haven’t connected with for ages, invite a loved one over for tea, remind someone how much you appreciated their advice taken decades ago, or celebrate the beginning of Spring with a neighbor, all through your very own handwriting!  As much as the general public has been sucked in by the digital world, the simple fact is this…People still very much enjoy and appreciate receiving written correspondence.

Last month I was a part of the Morningside After Dark Storytelling and Live Music Series where I kicked off the Postcard Project, handing free and stamped postcards to each attendee. The idea was for guests to connect with others through a simple and short handwritten message, whether a relationship currently in their lives or from the past. I was amazed at the reaction I received by these strangers. Not only did they thank me for beginning the process of a correspondence, but also how such a small project can be a reminder of the value of this kind of communication. The meaning behind the words become intimate rather than the predictable and impersonal email or text. Give it shot, just one letter, one note. The action will force you to pause as well as the recipient.

Signed, Sealed, Delivered

As the festive season is coming to a close, wouldn’t it be nice if your stamps and Thank You cards were all lined up and ready for writing early in the New Year? Yes? That’s what we thought too!! Kick off your enthusiasm with ordering a few of these beautiful stamps for the new year.

The elegant 2014 Year of the Horse Forever stamp features Chinese drums and drumsticks painted red for luck, the seventh in the Celebrating Lunar New Year series.

Nothing beats the classic Ray Charles Forever stamp, a part of the Music Icons Series. The stamp sheet was designed to appear similar to a vintage 45 rpm record sleeve, with one side filled with stamps and the other an image of a record peeking out the top of the sleeve.

Here’s a peek of a few of my favorite stamps arriving in the coming year…

A new postcard stamp of the graceful hummingbird will arrive early in 2014.

The great spangled fritillary butterfly 66 cent stamp will make its way out in the New Year…

…as is the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge Priority Mail stamp marking the bridge’s 50th birthday in 2014, a part of the USPS  Stamps Places series.

(If you are stamp nut, look back at the 2013 Stamp Stories and vote for your favorite stamps!)

Now all you need are some Thank You notes…

The Capri Thank You Set on Brown Ink Paper Goods is perfect for anyone on your list.

Although created for wedding needs, this modern and personalized Vista Thank You Card Set from Seaborn Press would be brilliant to have on hand.

VW Bus, letterpress cards, set of 6

Throw a little nostalgia in your note with the 60’s VW Bus card set from Pistachio Press.

If you are looking to make Thank You cards enjoyable for the kid in your life, try out these Many Thanks stamps on Brown Ink Paper Goods, with a variety of ink pad colors to select from.

Or pick a set of Les Animaux cards for the more mature young adult.

Whether they actually say “Thank You” or simply display a memorable image, it’s the written word which will appeal to the receiver on a cold winter’s day!

Peace & Snow

Over the years, my Yearly Planners have become something of a journal, holding not only appointments but also lists of Things-To-Do, goals for a season, recipes to try, etc., with never enough room to keep what’s juggling in my head. So when I noticed the Emily Ley’s Simplified Planner on The Paper Chronicles my interest perked up.

ELSimplifiedPlanner_04-640x420.jpeg

Although I’m usually more of a black or blue covered russell&hazel Calendar gal, there is such thought and organization in this book I embraced the spirited, rainbow cover.  Last night as I began entering my 2014 appointments and unloading the Things-To-Do lists from my noggin’ into the well-designed, hard covered book, a peace rushed through me. This planner not only offers a calendar but opportunities to balance the rest of my life. Finally, a gal who understands the needs of life yet keeping true to the paper and pen.  And since the excitement over the planner has been so great, Emily is offering a discount on orders being shipped in 2014. Thanks fellow paper enthusiast!!
